Hallucinogenic Plants

The proposal was to transform an “average” book into a coffee table book. The selected book was “Hallucinogenic Plants” by Richard Evans Schultes, an American biologist who is considered by many as the father of modern ethnobotany. The book provides information on the native habitat, appearance, characteristics, and past and present uses of numerous plants whose chemical composition causes sensory distortion.

As informative as the original book was, I needed a way to transform the experience too. The updated design transforms the current design to reflect the content by using typography, color, and photo manipulation.

Design

The design was inspired by the imagery one would be affected with while on hallucinogens. As the reader progresses in the book, the warping of the text and imagery also intensifies.
